The presenter for our May 6, 2021 meeting will be Mike Wolfe, owner and principal developer at Grandjean & Braverman, Inc. Mike also writes the NoLongerSet Blog. Mike will show us how he Uses WithEvents to implement Excel-like arrow key navigation of a continuous form (where up and down arrows move to the same control in the previous or next record, respectively).
Did you ever wish you could use the up and down arrow keys to navigate your continuous forms the way you navigate an Excel spreadsheet? In Access, pressing the down arrow key moves you to the next control instead of the next row. You can capture those key presses and override them using the Key Down event, but that’s a lot of work. What if you could do all that work once and call it whenever you wanted with only *two lines of code*? Through the miracle of encapsulation, class modules, and the WithEvents keyword, I will show you how to do exactly that.
Limitations on navigation in continuous forms is a regular topic in forums I frequent, so I’m really looking forward to this discussion. More details will be available as we get closer to the date.
Mike has also been recruited to present the new coding project from called TwinBasic at Karl Donaubauer’s virtual Access DevCon 2021 on the 22nd and 23rd of April. twinBASIC is a modern version of the classic BASIC programming language, so if you have signed up for Access Devcon, you’ll get a chance to see Mike in action before our meeting and a first hand look at a really cool new tool coming on line for Access developers. The Access DevCon is always a great event, too.
