Access Lunchtime – Unravelling Constraints – A Case Study with Steve Schapel

Come join us on the last Tuesday of every month @ 12 noon CDT.  Maria Barnes will be your host and we will cover lots of interesting topics related to Microsoft AEventsccess.  This is a free webinar for 1 hour, we look forward to meeting you!

=== MEETING DETAILS ===

We meet every last Tuesday of the month at 12 noon CDT (UTC -5:00 hours)

On March 26th our presenter will be Steve Schapel. Steve explains:

Recently I have been challenged to build some functionality into an Access application, which includes what I have now come to recognize as a “constraint satisfaction algorithm”.
This presentation will tell the story of my journey through the process of solving this thorny problem.
We will not aim at a super detailed nitty-gritty technical exposé – that’s not really the main point.
Rather, we will look conceptually at the functionality and data management requirements of this application. And explore the kinds of constraints involved – not just within the data, but within the apparent capabilities of Access and VBA, and within the applicable experience and abilities of myself and my colleagues.
I hope that seeing this example of a real-world Access application, and learning about my problem-solving process in this case, will be interesting and stimulating.

Coming from a completely different occupational background, Steve volunteered in 1994 to help manage the enrolments for a conference he was involved in and decided to explore doing this on a computer.  In the process, he fell in love with Access (version 1.1) and discovered that he had a kind of affinity for this kind of thinking. The love affair bloomed, as he took advantage of opportunities to develop various databases. He gradually transitioned from his previous career into working full-time developing Access applications, which has continued pretty much until the present – although a bit slower of late. During most of that time, a central focus of his work has been in the area of sports competition management. He was an Access MVP for 11 years, first awarded in 2000.
