Access Europe – Crystal Long (Classic vs Modern Charts)

Crystal Long has been an MVP since 2006 and is active on several forums as ‘strive4peace’. She teaches in virtual classrooms and guides individual developers whilst they are building applications. Crystal’s website, MsAccessGurus.com contains free code, tools, videos, and articles. On her YouTube channel, LearnAccessByCrystal, you’ll find lots of Access videos and some about other Office topics.

In this month’s session, Crystal will be discussing the two types of charts available in Access – the original ‘classic’ charts and the newer ‘modern’ charts available as an update to Access 2016 and all later versions including 365.

Access has impressive charting capabilities but the wizard used to create the classic charts is unclear and difficult to use. This tends to obscure the many possible options available and, as a result, some users give up in frustration.

Modern charts have a better user interface with more colors to pick from. Classic charts have more power and flexibility but aren’t as intuitive to modify. Which is right for your application?

Crystal will compare classic and modern charts, show the capabilities, advantages and disadvantages of each. The session will include:

  • Steps to create charts, set the data source, axes, legend, titles, and specify formatting.
  • Overview of chart types and tips about when to use each type.
  • How to change charts at runtime
  • A sample database to use for reference along with a document summarizing what you can do with VBA and how to get more help.

Additionally, learn about an easy way you can add bar-charts to queries like sparklines in Excel using Unicode and not a chart object.

Have fun adding great visualizations to your applications!
