Pat created a database to help people to understand how and why to use the Form’s BeforeUpdate event to validate data before it can be saved to the permanent tables.

It is a great tool to learn how Access works so you can use Form and Control events as the MS Access design team intended them to be used. I started programming in 1967 at The Traveler’s Insurance Co in Hartford. So I’ve been programming since before I was old enough to vote and before there were degree programs for software disciplines. The Traveler’s took me as a trainee and molded me in their image where I worked for the next 20+ years for them and later as a consultant all over the US and even in the Middle East using COBOL, IMS, DB2, and CICS. Then in the early 90’s while on assignment at Reader’s Digest I discovered Access. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. I could make pretty forms by pointing and clicking and little code (compared to building a CICS transaction from scratch). Access could update DB2 tables on the IBM mainframe and was so much more productive than coding everything by hand that I gradually started shifting my practice from mainframe work to Access. Good thing to because after the Y2K debacle, the mainframe work dried up and moved to India where people were doing it for $5 per hour and no benefits.

For a couple of years, I was an “insider” at Microsoft and even attended a very special event in Redmond where the Access team demo’d the final beta of Access to about 20 of us in early 2006. I took it home the first release candidate and installed it and never went back. The following year, Office 2007 was released and along with it, lots of changes. A number of which still irk me to this day. It’s all about mouse clicks and change for the sake of change but here we are. After that I moved on to being an MVP for a few years.

I started answering questions on forums a couple of years after I discovered Access mostly because I could. I would go in search of a solution and end up helping someone else. Access is very much like bridge (my other love). It is obvious enough that you can sort of use it after a couple of hours but it takes a lifetime to master so it never gets boring.
