Duane Hookom will speak on Embedding a Table of Contents into a Report.

Duane has a degree in Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Studies but discovered database programming in the early 80s beginning with Basic and dBase. He began working with Access (version 1.1) almost 30 years ago and gave up dealing with hockey and baseball parents to start a database consulting career. Duane was hired by Nestle in 2001 (the same year he was first awarded MVP) and retired in 2021 to a life of parks, recreation, and leisure practical application. One of his greatest joys has been sharing food, drink, and conversation with fellow MVPs in their home area including several cities in the United States, Paris, Vienna, Bamberg, Toronto, London, and Copenhagen.

He was asked to produce an Access report with an embedded table of contents (product categories and products). He did a lot of searching and found solutions that involved creating two separate reports, sending reports to PDF and then combining them, and using Word automation. None of these seemed satisfactory to him.

The main issue is that TOC will vary based on report filters and section sizes. To get an accurate TOC you must fully render the report and write to a TOC table as each new section is printed. The TOC won’t show in the report since it hasn’t been built until after the report has run.  Find out how Duane resolved this with a simple to implement solution.

We meet every last Tuesday of the month at 12 noon CDT.
